Washington, D.C. -Today, Congressman Kevin Brady released the following statement after voting against partisan immigration legislation in the House of Representatives:

"This week, I voted against two proposals from House democrats that exposed their unwillingness to address the root of the immigration problem: unsecure southern borders.Instead, they want to take American taxpayer money and use it to demoralize our law enforcement agents and prioritize illegal immigrants over US veterans –wasteful proposals that do nothing to prevent another border crisis.

"Instead of radical policies like these, I encourage my Democratic colleagues to work with us on commonsense legislation that secures our borders, offers support to our CBP and ICE agents, fights injustices like human and drug trafficking while also providing humanitarian aid for migrant families."

Background: This week, the House of Representatives voted on two immigration bills, H.R. 2203, The Homeland Security Improvement Act and H.R. 3525, the U.S. Border Patrol Medical Screening Standards Act.

H.R. 2203, The Homeland Security Improvement Act, would:

  • Create anindependent monitoring committee that detracts from the ability of the Department of Homeland Security to effectively secure the border and protect American citizens.
  • Take up critical resources that the Department needs and increase bureaucratic hurdles to securing the border.
  • Radically alter border enforcement policies.
  • Allow civil groups, including partisan and activist organizations to create enforcement protocols.

H.R. 3525, The U.S. Border Patrol Medical Screening Standards Act, would:

  • Mandate creation of an electronic health record system within a mere 90 days of enactment.
  • Strain DHS’s budget and resources at a time when it needs to allocate its resources toward ensuring it can process illegal border crossers and otherwise secure the border.
  • Place illegal immigrants before American servicemembers and veterans.
