U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady just helped direct 10,000 lbs of pork toward Texas hurricane victims. And it’s not the political kind of pork. We’re talking actual, edible meat that is being BBQed and smoked as I type. Hallelujah! The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4709 has received the enormous food donation, and it all came about because of a friend Brady hadn’t spoken to in 30 years.

Dave Husby is a co-owner of Marquardt-Skyway Transportation. When Hurricane Harvey struck, one of their trucks was stranded and couldn’t reach Houston. The truck was full of pork meat from Smithfeild Foods, of Virginia. Not wanting all that meat to go to waste, Husby reached out to Brady, who recommended he donate the meat to VFW Post 4709, which is actively aiding first responders and victims.

Of the initial phone call, Brady recalls, “They can’t get into Houston so they call our office and say, ‘Hey, who can use all this pork? They said, Conroe can. Montgomery County can. Isn’t that amazing? Someone I haven’t talked to in 30 years and they are reaching out to give us help. All these guys are planning to cook it, some for first responders and some they are going to send to Beaumont.”

In addition to securing a whole lot of BBQ, Brady has also been working alongside President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott to ensure immediate financial assistance to Texans through the federal disaster declaration.

“President Trump and Governor Abbott turned that around in less than 24 hours,” Brady said. “I’ve never seen that before.”

In fact, President Trump called Brady at his home on Wednesday to check in on the North Houston community and ask what more he could do to help Texans.
