U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady is using some time back in his home district to build up support for what he and other Republican leaders are expecting to be a major battle in Congress in hammering out what could be the first major change in the nation's tax system in a generation.

Speaking to employees at the The Woodlands office of engineering firm Jones & Carter, Inc., Brady, R-The Woodlands, said that if he and his fellow Republicans are able to get their proposed tax changes through Congress it would be the most dramatic change to the nation's tax code since Ronald Reagan was president.

Brady, who chairs the powerful Ways and Means Committee, the chief tax-writing committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, is promising the GOP tax plan would lower taxes for individuals and businesses, as well as make filing taxes so easy it would be a matter of simply filling out a postcard.

"Rather than have a tax code merely designed to ring money from you," Brady said as he compared the current tax system to the proposed changes. "We've got that tax code already. I want a tax code built for growth. Literally designed to grow jobs and wages in the U.S. economy."
